History of Geita Gold International School

The gold-rich Geita region, south of Lake Victoria, is home to the large-scale Geita Gold Mine, which also houses the Geita Gold International School. The mine was reopened in 2000 under the management of AngloGoldAshanti after being closed in 1966.

Not only did the mine hire many employees in its first year of operation, but a steady stream of people moved to the area, as the town is surrounded by artisanal mining areas, so Geita quickly became urbanised. With the increase in population, school places quickly became scarce, making it difficult for Tanzanian and expatriate employees of the mine to find places for their children in local schools. The remaining options for these employees were homeschooling by mail or long journeys for their children to school.

Some of these employees who had difficulty finding suitable schools for their children approached the mine’s management. After consultation with the management, permission was granted in 2001 to establish Mchauru International School, which was operated by the International School of Tanganyika (IST) and functioned as one of its satellite schools until 2004, when the mine took over the school operations, so that the school calendar could be aligned with the annual leave cycle of employees. In 2014, it was then registered as Geita Gold International School, wholly owned and operated by the mine.
